Contaminant Sequestration Technology

PNNL is developing nanoporous, materials-based technology for water and waste treatment. Three specific types of novel substrates—self-assembled monolayers on mesoporous silica (SAMMSTM)—that we have developed and tested so far are targeted to remove metals (e.g., mercury, silver, cadmium, lead, copper and thallium), oxyanions (arsenic, chromium, selenium and molybdenum) and radionuclides (e.g., uranium, plutonium, neptunium, technetium and iodine) from water and waste streams. These novel materials are ready to be commercialized.
